OVERVIEW

Underground mining at great depths is associated with the presence of high stresses in the surrounding workings in many. With the progress of mining and ever greater deposit depths, significant changes in stress and strain conditions have been observed. Such phenomena may lead to the occurrence of seismic events, rock bursts and roof falls. Therefore proper evaluation of working stability is one of the best ways to mitigate these risks.

 

This presentation illustrates the possibilities of reliable evaluation of underground workings stability with the use of the 3D Finite Element Method in GTS NX software.

 

The presented case study illustrates the condition observed in one of KGHM deep underground copper mines in which a room-and-pillar mining system is utilized.

Results in form of Safety Factor allow for the assessment of which parts of mining excavation are prone to instability occurrence, and where additional preventive actions should be undertaken.

Krzysztof Fuławka

 

PhD Krzysztof Fuławka is Researcher in Rock Engineering Department of KGHM Cuprum Ltd Research and Development Centre. He received his doctoral degree in Mining Engineering at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, Poland. He also obtained a postgraduate diploma in Applied Geophysics at AGH University of Science and Technology, Cracow, Poland. In last few years, Krzysztof has participated in numerous international research and scientific projects financed by Interreg BSR, Polish National Centre for Research and Development, Horizon 2020 and EIT Raw Materials. He is an author and co-author of numerous research reports, scientific papers and pre-feasibility studies. His background is rock mechanics and numerical modelling as well as risk assessment and blasting technology. Krzysztof Fuławka is also a vice-chair of European Underground Laboratories Association (EUL).
