This presentation illustrates the best practices for designing tailings dams of the upstream construction method using the Finite Element Method. As more and more tailings storage facilities are failing each year, causing permanent ecological disasters, computational methods can be used to determine the most stable approach for the long-term stability of these dams. This session will demonstrate the usage of coupled analysis by taking phreatic lines, pore pressures from tailings deposition and water head, anisotropy in permeability, and the subsequent dyke stability to thoroughly approximate the actual field behavior of tailings storage facilities.
