Modelling using Midas GTS NX - how close are we to the reality? – Sharing of two project applications
Project application 1: Concrete infilled steel pipe pile – load-settlement curve
Project application 2: Failure of a RC pile supported RC wall in soft clay
The finite element is sought after by practicing engineers to solve unconventional problems. In bridge foundation design, structural engineers may want to increase the rigidity of the steel pipe pile by infilling the steel pipe pile. This is unconventional to the typical steel pipe pile analysis. Midas GTS NX was employed to simulate the load-settlement curve of the concrete infilled steel pipe pile and typical steel pipe pile. On the second project application, leakage from the swimming pool built on the RC wall has caused the water to build up behind the RC wall and subsequently triggered the failure. Midas GTS NX was employed to uncover the whole failure mechanism.

>> Bored piles in tropical soils and rocks: shaft and base resistances, t-z and q-w models.
: Dr. Yin Hoe Ong describes the analysis results from 100 instrumented bored pile load tests in different weathering grades of different tropical geological formations of peninsular Malaysia.
Ong Yin Hoe
Ir. Dr. Ong Yin Hoe has a Masters in soil engineering from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering from Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP). He has worked as a geotechnical engineer for 20 years including as resident engineer for foundation works, anchored contiguous bored pile wall, diaphragm walls, bored piles and jack – in piles. He has also been involved in the design of highways on soft ground. As well he has vast experience in three dimensional finite element analysis of tunnels, basement excavations and bored piles and has been involved in impact assessment of basement excavations on existing tunnels, underground rail stations and existing viaduct structures. He has authored of more than 10 papers on numerical methods and bored piles.
Dr. Toh Associates Sdn.Bhd.
Dr. Toh Associates Sdn. Bhd. is a continuation of Dr. C.T. Toh Consultant which was set up in January 1989 to undertake consultancy works in geotechnical engineering. The firm is based in Kuala Lumpur and has been undertaking works in Malaysia. A few projects have been undertaken in Brunei, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Philippines.
